What is the difference between Gibibyte and Gigabyte (GiB and Go)? Mio and Mo, etc.

If you were asked the question how many Megabytes is 1 Gigabyte, what would your answer be? If you are thinking that the answer must be 1024, uh well you are wrong. The difference between Gibibyte et Gigabyte is so far ignored by many people.

As it is known to many, in computer science a byte is a unit of measurement of the capacity of a memory and the speed of data transfer. It is a set of 8 bits, making it possible to encode up to 256 different characters. Since we are used to talking about Gigabytes, where does this term Gibibyte come from and what is it exactly?

Difference between Gibibyte and Gigabyte

The Gibi, closely related to the Giga, is one of the prefixes of the new standard for data storage units, created in 1998. Created by the International Electronic Commission, the Gibioctet (Gi for giga and bi for binary), is calculated in power of 2, in binary. Unlike the Gigabyte which is calculated in power of 10, in decimal.

The use of this new standard, although not at all new, has not yet been fully integrated by many users. And not only them, since some hardware manufacturers use Gigabytes (GB) to display the capacity of their peripherals, yet calculated in Gibibytes (Gio). Which, from a technical point of view, is a mistake.

This leads users to misinterpret the capacity of their devices. In fact, 1 Gibibyte (Gibibyte) means 1 bytes, or 073 Megabytes. 741 Gigabyte (Gigabyte) means 824 bytes or 1024 Megabytes.

This means that 1 Gigabyte, equaling 1000 Megabytes, is obtained by multiplying 1000 by 1000. While 1 Gibibyte, equaling 1024 Megabytes, is obtained by multiplying 1024 by 1024. It is therefore out of habit, and improperly, that some people count still 1024 Megabytes for designer 1 Gigabyte. 1 Giga is simply equal to 1000 Mega and not 1024.

Other binary prefixes to remember

To better differentiate between Gibibyte and Gigabyte, it is important to try to understand other binary prefixes. Here are the multiples of the byte:

  1. Kibibyte (KiB), Ki per kilo and bi for binary, is 1024 bytes.
  2. Megabyte (MiB), equals 1 bytes or 048 multiplied by 576.
  3. Gibibyte (GiB), equals 1 bytes.
  4. Tebibyte (TiB), equals 1 bytes.
  5. Pebibyte (Pio), equals bytes or 1024 Tbibytes.
  6. Exbibyte (Eio), equals bytes, or 1024 Pebibytes.
  7. Zbibyte (ZiB), equals bytes, or 1024 Exbibytes.
  8. Yobibyte (Yio), equals bytes, or 1024 Zbibytes.

If you want to perform binary prefix conversion calculations to decimal prefixes or vice versa, you should know that there are online tools that can make your job easier. That is to say from Kilo to Kibi, Mébi to Méga, Giga, Gibi, Tébi, etc. In the meantime, remember that 1 Gigabyte is 0.931 Gigabyte, and 1 Gibibyte is 1.073 Gigabyte.

Computer scientists or simple users, the error is present in all camps. At least you know by now, Gibibyte also exists and is different from Gigabyte. No longer use one in place of the other.
